What determines the cost of replacement windows?

Five factors do most of the work. Opening count — the per-window figure usually comes down on a larger project, because setup, disposal and travel get spread across more units. Size — a wide picture window costs more than a bedroom double-hung, and oversized glass needs more hands to set safely. Frame material — vinyl, composite, fiberglass and wood sit at different points. Glass package — double versus triple pane, the type of low-E coating, and whether the space between panes is filled with argon or plain air. Condition of the opening — an opening with rotted framing or one that has shifted out of square needs work before a new unit goes in.

Why won't anyone quote a price over the phone?

Accepted Answer

Because the honest answer depends on measurements nobody has yet. Two homes on the same street, built by the same builder to the same plan, routinely turn out to have different opening sizes once someone puts a tape on them. Settling, past remodels and previous replacements all move things. A phone number is enough to book the visit; it isn't enough to price the work.

Why do two quotes for the same house come back so far apart?

Usually because they're not for the same thing. Check whether both include full disposal of the old units, exterior trim and capping work, interior finish work, and the same glass package — and whether both are insert replacements or full-frame replacements. A quote that leaves out finish work looks cheaper on paper and costs more once the job is real. Ask both companies to itemize; the gap almost always explains itself.

Is it cheaper to replace all the windows at once?

Per window, generally yes — you pay for setup, delivery and disposal once instead of several times. Whether that makes it the right choice is a different question. Plenty of homeowners do the worst elevation first and come back for the rest later, and there's nothing wrong with that. We'll price it both ways so you can see the difference and decide.

Payment and financing options are something to go over during your estimate, since what's available changes and depends on the project. We'd rather show you real terms in writing than describe them vaguely here.

Is the estimate really free?

Accepted Answer

Yes, and there's no obligation attached to it. Someone measures your openings, looks at the condition of the framing, talks through your options and leaves you a written number. If you decide not to move forward, that's the end of it.

Which window style suits a Northwest Indiana home?

Accepted Answer

Double-hung is the region's default for good reason — it fits the openings in most of the housing stock here, from older two-flats to single-story ranches, and both sashes tilt in for cleaning. Casements seal tighter and suit exposed elevations. Sliders work where there's no room for a swinging sash. Picture windows maximize light but don't ventilate. Most homes end up with a mix.

Is triple-pane glass worth it here?

It can be, on the elevations that need it. Triple pane raises the interior surface temperature of the glass, which cuts down on the cold-glass feeling and on condensation — both real issues in a lake-effect climate. It also costs more and weighs more. A common approach is triple pane where it earns its keep, on north and west exposures and in rooms you actually sit in, and double pane elsewhere.

What do U-factor and SHGC actually mean?

U-factor measures how much heat escapes through the whole window — lower is better insulation. SHGC (solar heat gain coefficient) measures how much of the sun's heat comes through — lower keeps more summer heat out, higher lets more winter sun in. In a climate with hard winters, a low U-factor usually matters more than a very low SHGC. Both appear on the sticker.

Do all the windows have to match?

Structurally, no. Visually, on a single elevation, usually yes — mismatched sightlines, frame colors or grille patterns on the same face of the house read as a mistake even to people who can't say why. Different styles on different elevations, or different glass packages front to back, are normal and often sensible.

Can my windows be repaired instead of replaced?

Accepted Answer

Often, yes. Broken balances, failed weatherstripping, a cracked pane, sticking sash and worn hardware are all repairable, and repair is the right answer when the frame is sound. Replacement becomes the better spend when the frame itself is failing, when the sash has rotted, or when you're chasing the same problem across most of the house.

My windows are fogged between the panes — what does that mean?

The seal around the insulated glass unit has failed, letting moisture into the space between the panes. You can't clean it, because the haze is on interior surfaces you can't reach. The unit has also lost most of its insulating value. Sometimes the glass unit alone can be swapped; sometimes the whole window has aged out alongside it.

Where are drafts actually coming from?

Less often through the glass than people assume. Air usually moves at the meeting rail where two sashes come together, around a worn or compressed weatherstrip, through gaps between the window frame and the rough opening behind the trim, or past a sash that no longer closes tight because a balance has failed. Finding which one it is changes whether you need a repair or a replacement.

How long does a window project take?

The install itself is usually one to a few days depending on opening count and access. The longer stretch is between ordering and installing, because units are built to your measurements — that's a lead time we'll give you a realistic read on when you order, rather than a number here that may not hold.

What happens between the estimate and installation day?

You approve a written scope, someone comes back to take final measurements for the order, the units are built to those measurements, and installation gets scheduled once they arrive. Final measuring after approval isn't duplicated effort — it's the step that keeps a custom order from arriving wrong.

Do I need to be home?

Someone should be home for the estimate, since it involves walking the house and looking at every opening from inside and out. For installation, you need to provide access and be reachable, but you don't have to hover.

You get told before anything else happens, along with what it takes to fix it. Hidden rot in the framing or sill is common in older homes and can't be reliably seen until the old unit is out. Setting a new window onto compromised framing wastes the window, so it gets repaired first.
